What to expect during a dental hygiene visit at Highland Dental Clinic
Your smile needs daily attention to stay free from decay and disease. This includes brushing the teeth after each meal and snack and flossing between the teeth to remove food particles that can develop into cavities. Fortunately, the team at Highland Dental Clinic in South Lakeland, Florida, can assist with dental hygiene services.
How often should I visit the dentist?
Dr. Blanca Fernandez encourages patients to visit her office every six months for both a professional cleaning and dental evaluation. This helps maintain oral health and wellness in combination with home hygiene habits. With regular cleanings and evaluations, patients reduce the risk of extensive damage if conditions such as periodontal disease or tooth decay are spotted and treated as soon as possible!
What can I expect during my dental hygiene visit at Highland Dental Clinic?
Our team is here to ensure you are comfortable from start to finish! We allow you to rest in our dental chair while we do all the work! We often start by discussing your dental and medical history and whether or not you use tobacco or alcohol. We ask about your oral health routine and if you have any conditions that might also impact your oral health, such as diabetes. Once we have talked to you about your current situation and dental goals, we can evaluate your teeth with a full-mouth periodontal chart. Our team checks the depth of pockets between the teeth and gums to determine if conditions such as periodontal disease are present, and then our hygienist will clean the teeth and gums to remove plaque and tartar from the surfaces. We polish your teeth to leave your smile squeaky clean, and healthy!

At your first visit, our hygienists will create a full-mouth periodontal chart that includes the depths of the pockets surrounding your teeth, noting any bleeding, charting the presence and location of plaque and calculus, and charting gum recession.
We will also ask you about your medical and dental history. We’ll also ask about tobacco and alcohol use and your dental hygiene routines. We can discuss any personal steps you can take to improve your dental health, if necessary.
Dr. Fernandez and Stephany the hygienist, will finish with a thorough cleaning that involves the removal of tartar and stains with hand instruments or a hand-held laser for stubborn stains and plaque, followed by polishing to eliminate remaining stains and plaque. The results are a squeaky-clean feeling and a beautiful luster.
